Finding Your Way Through Sober October
October is often a time when people choose to take a break from alcohol. You might have heard of “Sober October” and thought about giving it a try yourself. Maybe you want to see how it feels, improve your sleep or energy, or simply take a step back and notice your relationship with drinking.
Whatever your reasons, this month can be an opportunity to gently reset and take care of yourself. And from a solution-focused hypnotherapy perspective, the way we think about the journey makes a big difference.
Focus on What You’re Gaining
It’s very natural to think about what you’re giving up—perhaps the evening glass of wine or the social drink with friends. But often, it helps to ask instead:
- What do I want more of in my life by doing this?
- How would it feel to wake up with a clear head and more energy?
- What difference will this make for me, and perhaps even for those around me?
By turning your attention towards the benefits, you create motivation that feels uplifting, rather than restrictive.
Picture Your Best Self
A gentle exercise you can try is to close your eyes and imagine yourself at the end of the month, having achieved your goal. Notice:
- How do you feel in your body?
- What emotions are present?
- What small but meaningful changes have you noticed in your daily life?
Your mind is powerful. The more you imagine success, the easier it becomes to move in that direction.
Remember What’s Already Working
Even before starting, you may already have moments where you’ve chosen not to drink—perhaps on a weekday evening, at a family event, or simply because you wanted a good night’s sleep. These are signs that change is possible. Each small success is worth noticing because it shows you already have the strengths you need.
Gentle Strategies to Support You
- Plan ahead. Have a favourite alternative drink ready, so it feels like a positive choice.
- Breathe through cravings. Remind yourself they pass quickly, like a wave rising and falling.
- Find relaxation. Taking even five minutes to rest, breathe, or listen to calming music can reduce stress—helping you feel less drawn to old habits.
- Celebrate the positives. Better sleep, clearer skin, more energy—these small rewards will build up over the month.
Looking Beyond October
Sober October doesn’t have to mean making a lifelong decision. It can simply be a chance to pause, notice the difference, and reflect on what feels right for you. Whether you continue, cut down, or return to drinking more mindfully, you’ll have learned something valuable about yourself.
